Old models are broken.

New standards are required.

Our Mission.

In response, Industry, Hamilton Festival Theatre Company and GOODBODYFEEL have partnered together to shift the idea of what an arts institution should be. The Safer Spaces Project is dedicated to exploring the scope of safety in the Hamilton performing arts community. We understand there is a direct line from safety to confidence to risk-taking to innovation. If we aspire to be places of artistic innovation, this starts with safety.

The last number of years have seen a shake-up in the performing arts. Abuses of power, harassment, racial inequity, misogyny, transphobia, biphobia, fatphobia, ableism, and other systemic barriers and stigmas have made artists and patrons feel unsafe in artistic environments.

“We aim for this work to be helpful to other organizations and individuals beyond ourselves.”

Safer Spaces Project

About Us.

Led by Project Director Robin Lacambra, we have listened, collaborated and co-created with stakeholders on how we can make our spaces not only safer, but braver too. We’ve learned that while this project focuses on supporting artistic spaces, much of this work transfers into our everyday lives. The phases of this project have taken us into research and data collection, resource creation with the Internal Culture Guide, policy building work, facilitation and learning, and now curriculum building.

The Safer Spaces Project will be moving into Phase 3 wih an educational course available to the public for folks interested in training to become care coordinators for their own spaces. Stay tuned for details on how to access our classes!

Our Four Pillars.

Safer Spaces

A space intentionally designed to minimize harm, discrimination, and discomfort, allowing individuals to express themselves and feel safe, heard, understood and welcomed.

Braver Spaces

Where we can say no, advocate for ourselves & others, have conflicting needs, and take accountability. When we center understanding, we can build transformative relationships.

Self Awareness

The road to safety starts with what’s happening in our bodies. How do we speak to ourselves? Regulate our emotions? Hold ourselves accountable? Feel safe and supported?

Social Awareness

Understanding social and systemic dynamics is paramount. Oppression negatively impacts us all, and it’s our responsibility to acknowledge the privilege we hold to create better access.
